Felipa Cheng published “How to Get Your Artwork Featured in an OICA-sponsored Exhibit” in 2019. Wasn’t keen on UPLB OICA’s Sining Makiling Gallery at the time, though yes I read stories and heard tales. A year after her article, Felipa would count among my standout students. While she was in class, I submitted an exhibit proposal to OICA (Salungguhit: tula at sining with Pinky, Sir Alim, and Kevin). As I’m likely counted as someone in-circle, our exhibit won’t work as any sort of argument against Felipa. It is, however, an update. And among updates the least important, as OICA hosted two other exhibits: The UPLB Painters’ Club’s Labing-Isang Daliri 2023 Revival and (mas interesante) LYMMAC’s Pieces: A Modern Portraiture Exhibit! last year.
Have the students reclaimed the space? I’m not sure.
Should students stop submitting proposals? No.
Lalong hindi ngayon kung kailan kailangang buhayin lahat ng maaaring buhaying venue. Panahon ng censorship, disinformation, at iba pang mas rektang pamamaraan ng pagpapatahimik at pambabaluktot kaya, bukod sa pagtitiyak at pagsasaayos ang ating mga mensahe, mahalagang asikasuhin ang mismong mga lagusan ng mga mensahe.
Early last semester, my COMA 190 students visited the Pieces exhibit. They even chanced upon two of their Lyceum counterparts, and we had a few minutes discussing their work and expenses.
Before the semester ended, my students completed their visual art proposals. If I were curator, I told them, they’d all be up and running. Two of the proposals, I think are indispensable (tahimik na lang kung alin sa mga iyon). Sana may magpatuloy sa kanila ng pagsumite ng proyekto. Mailabas sana sa venue na gusto nila o nilikha mismo nila—uy, ang ACT Forum may call!—o sa Sining Makiling, kung may saysay pa rin ang pagbabaka-sakali.
